Are you having a Chinese Zodiac identity crisis?!

A very common comment I hear from my Feng Shui clients and students is that they are confused about their Chinese Zodiac animal and Lo Shu number because many systems incorrectly work with the “Chinese New Year” instead of the Winter Solstice. This can cause great confusion in people and almost an identity crisis! Read more →

Students pass Feng Shui practitioner exam with flying colours

Very happy that my latest group of Feng Shui Practitioner students passed their exam, after assessing a residential property in Hendon, North London. The examiner said the standard was very high from all of the students, so as their teacher I am very pleased, and knew they would do well as they have all worked so hard.
Some people think that traditional Feng Shui is full of scary portents and lists of dos and don’ts….well, yes there are some rules you should avoid breaking where possible, but the whole point about learning a skill in depth is that you can truly understand the subject and give advice with confidence and decisiveness, not from fear which is often based on ignorance. The only scary thing about classical Feng Shui is the amount of hard work it takes to master the subject!

The limitations and possibilities of Feng Shui

It was nice to catch up last night with a colleague of mine I hadn’t seen for years and we discussed Feng Shui research, public perception of Feng Shui and what it is like running a Feng Shui business. We tried hard not to start bemoaning the low quality of some very eminent Feng Shui consultants and the fact that some major governing bodies of Feng Shui demonstrate mistrust in classical Chinese Feng Shui!! How is that possible!! Its quite incredible really.

Anyhow, we discussed a few interesting client cases (in full confidence of course) and concluded a few things as follows:

Free Feng Shui tips are both a mixed blessing – I deliberately keep my free tips limited to actions I know cannot be misinterpreted or misused in any way. But there are plenty of unscrupulous consultants who would sell their grandmother’s to get the attention of the websurfer and next client!  It is little wonder then when people try these tips and find they don’t work (or cause harm) that people are tempted to abandon the whole idea of using Feng Shui at all.

Lets be sensible here – would you trust a doctor’s diagnosis that was given in a non-personal way, remotely or from a Twitter account – no, of course not! Feng Shui is like any other profession – it takes years to achieve a level where you can DELIVER what you say you can, and even then there are a multitude of influences beyond the control of the consultant.

Effectively, Feng Shui is seeking to align the human being with Heaven and Earth, or in more down to earth terms, our environmental chi, from local conditions to global conditions we are all affected. The ancient cultures and tribes have always known instinctively that our actions are connected to the community and planet and modern scientisits and quantum physicicsts repeatedly confirm that the world is nothing but a matrix of energy and consciousness.

So, it is no coincidence then that clients with less than perfect Feng Shui conditions in certain areas of the house will suffer because of the poor design of the house, not the lack of skill of the consultant. We are not Gods! We are simply human and trying to do our very best for people in an increasingly hectic society where the prizes go sometimes not to the people of quality but those who shout loudest or are the shrewdest marketers. In my opinion, you can be BOTH a quality consultant AND a good marketeer and I even see it as my DUTY to myself, life and others to remain diligent in my efforts to educate people about quality Feng Shui.

I’d like a bit more help from Chue Foundation, but Grand Master Chan is not a publicity seeking man as he knows how the press have the tendancy to misquote and even try to undermine people. Plus, he does not seek the limelight because his Feng Shui is very powerful, so he doesn’t want masses of clients, just the clients that are right for him.

How to select a good Feng Shui course and teacher

A lot of my time is spent talking to prospective students who have enquired about our courses and the same concerns, hopes and dreams crop up quite frequently, so I thought a blog post would be interesting for people.

On the Feng Shui teaching and consulting ‘grapevine’ I hear first and second hand accounts of students who have attended other courses with well-known Feng Shui schools and been very disappointed with the materials taught and indeed even with the ethics of the teach. Far from it for me to name names, but I do feel a responsibility to point out the merits of my own courses so that people understand why they are better, take a little longer, cost a little more in the short term but save you money in the longer term and thoroughly prepare you for not only the delights but also the rigours of a career as a professional Feng Shui consultant.

Worry about demand once qualified (quote example of a practitioner course student already in demand because she puts in extra time to her studies….)

Worry about quality of material taugth

Worry about quality of teaching

Warning signs:

Will teacher make themselves available to you on the phone in person?

Some teachers and consultants will refuse to spend time talking to the prospective student or client. My PA Sally makes initial enquiries and ascertains whether the student desires to talk to me, but never outright refuses to connect the student with me. How can you trust someone who is so self-important?

Distinguishing Quality in Feng Shui

The question of quality comes up again and again when clients tell me they tried this practitioner and students tell me they tried this or that school, so I thought I’d share my perspective.

Remember the film Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring, when Gandalf researches about Bilbo’s ring by visiting a library full of piles of scrolls…well, I quite often look like Gandalf – working late into the night surrounded by complex Chinese handouts, Chinese calendars, charts and a few western books on Feng Shui (the academic ones not the airy fairy ones!) and I see all these shortcut Feng Shui teachings on offer and the various computer apps, and I quite literally shudder, because I know that at best totally over generalised and at worst completely inaccurate information is increasingly accessed by people.

Believe me, if there is a good shortcut I don’t mind taking it, so I am not unnecessarily holding on to elaborate effort that could be automated! But the fact of the matter is that some people have turned Feng Shui into simply a commercial enterprise with little thought for the quality of the information, yet with all the front of Harrods, so to speak, so people fall for the glitz and for $12 think they can work a Lopan Compass correctly on their iphone….! C’mon get real!

Its no wonder that some of the public perceive Feng Shui as some airy fairy DIY stunt that anyone can do and balk at the consultancy costs of professionals with years of experience and proper training. Thankfully, most of my clients have either had a good experience with me so they return or they have some knowledge of how to discern between the flakes and the skillful.

People issue predictions that are total nonsense because they don’t understand the complexity of Feng Shui and the ever changing energetic terrain. Consultants say they do Flying Star, but they just work with the simple Lo Shu and call it flying star, even the basics of which need constant repetition and reinforcement, research and analysis in order to understand the subtleties and pitfalls.

Free VIDEO – How to Feng Shui your Health

Here is another free Feng Shui video offering you some insights on how Feng Shui can be used to support your health.

Look for the map of directions and body parts/organs and see what quality of energy is in your home in that direction. If it is stagnant or cluttered then you need to get organised as it will improve the energy of that direction and according to ancient Chinese metaphysics in turn support the function of the body organ associated with that direction.

Tips for a Happy Feng Shui Christmas!

We are approaching the Winter Solstice,  one of the major energetic turning points of the year as the longest night (yin) greets the return of the Sun (yang) and the days become longer. From a Chinese metaphysics perspective, the forces of yin and yang are the building blocks of the/your universe because they represent the dynamics of birth, death and the ever changing cycle of natural energy.  Read more →

Feng Shui increasingly used for New York real estate deals

This article discusses rise in use of Feng Shui by New Yorkers and Asian investors when considering which real estate investments to make.

There is a rather alarming depiction of the boss of a real estate company taking his/her own readings without having any professional training – it is not something that you can DIY!

On the whole though, a good article, which can only help spread awareness this special art.
