27 Apr Creating a Sensory Feng Shui Moon Garden
“We are all like the bright moon, we still have our darker side.” Kahlil Gibran
With the full moon approaching on the 29th April, I thought it would be lovely to explore which plants only blossom at night and look particularly beautiful under a full moon. Years ago when I lived in Bristol, I had planted an area of my garden for evening delight, with fragrant white Nicotiana plants and night-scented stocks…
Do you moon bathe?
Even if not in a bikini or my birthday suit(!), as it is usually too cold here in the UK, but I always wrap up and sit under a bright or full moon even if only for 5 minutes. I love the soft silence of moonlight. I love the mystical quality the silver rays bring to the world after twilight and how it subtly changes the appearance of the landscape that we ordinarily see by daylight.
Feng Shui is full of references to the moon and the sun, as these are such powerful influencers of nature’s cycles. The sun is considered yang (masculine) and the moon yin (feminine).
Sitting outside to enjoy your Feng Shui moon garden at night will act as a soothing contrast to the heat & activity of the day.
So you will need to plant a few night blooming flowers.
Here are a few that I have found:
CHOCOLATE DAISIES! – for real!! These bloom throughout the night releasing a scent of chocolate until the early hours of the morning!
DATURA – or Moonflower – calling all Carlos Santana fans, why not listen to the Moonflower album one evening while chilling under the moonlight…
NYMPHEA ‘Red Flare’ is a water lilly that blooms in ponds at night
CASABLANCA lilly has an incredible scent which is best at night, otherwise known as Oriental Lilly.
GARDENIA AUGUSTA – releases its beautiful scent in the late evening
TUBEROSE – its fragrance intensifies at night
NIGHT-SCENTED STOCKS – mix these with the daytime stocks to have colour in the day and then scent and blooms at night
NICOTIANA ALATA – the night scented tobacco plant smells divine
BRUGMANSIA – actually opens for a week around the full moon!
NIGHT BLOOMING JASMINE – apparently at night the scent drifts about 20 feet from the plant – heavenly!
In Feng Shui we have “Moon Blessing” days which are considered to have beautiful auspicious energy and in the Chinese Horoscope there is also the Moon Blessing which some people are lucky to have in their natal chart.
“The moon does not fight. It attacks no one. It does not worry. It does not try to crush others. It keeps to its course, but by its very nature, it gently influences. What other body could pull an entire ocean from shore to shore? The moon is faithful to its nature and its power is never diminished.” Ming-Dao Deng, Everyday Tao: Living with Balance and Harmony
