Water Element in Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology

Sarah Mcallister • May 05, 2021

Are you fearful or courageous? Are you depressed or alert? Water Element reveals its secrets...

In this mini-series I am going to describe each of the Five Elements that are used in Feng Shui, and also in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and I will start with Water element, since nothing can survive without it.

Actual Water
Water element in Feng Shui relates to actual water, like rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, oceans etc. and as in nature water represents life and life-force or chi as we call it. You will often find people are drawn to water, whether it is the ocean front, or a large water fountain in a park or outside a museum, or even the water-cooler in the office!

Body Organ & Emotion
Water is also associated with the bladder (yang) and kidneys (yin) and the emotions of courage or fear. Quite often if someone has depleted water energy they are overly timid and hesitant and slightly apologetic about themselves. Its as if they aren't fully inhabiting their body and have trouble asserting themselves unless there is a sense of drama accompanying it.

Colours of water
Water is expressed by the nighttime colour of black and also by navy blue, RAF blue, cool blue and a warm aqua blue.

Patterns of water
Just as a stone cast into a pool causes undulating ripples or a duck swimming along or a speedboat will cause a wake behind them, water patterns are ones which have a lot of movement and also can by asymmetric and a little indistinct too. Softly wavy and swirling patterns are also be water element.

Directions of Water
The compass direction related to water is the North. This can be the North part of your house and the North of a city, or the North of a country, but the more Northerly and cold a region is then the more it is associated with Water element. Northern Iceland will be a lot more water element than say Northern Antigua!

Excess Water in Feng Shui
Let's imagine you wear black or blue all the time and live in a home that is predominantly blue and is North facing and you sleep in a north facing bedroom and you spend most of your day in the North facing study which is painted blue and has black furniture in it, you are likely going to start feeling pretty unbalanced and possibly even a bit depressed and anxious.

Of course, not everyone is going to be this extreme but it does happen, and it can easily happen when there has been no consideration of the feng shui readings at a property. Many people move into a new home without considering the feng shui energy, and paint throughout in the wrong colours just because it is a latest fad (like soft grey) or they just like the style of it (fair enough). While I LOVE supporting you to express your unique sense of style, I also believe it is best to work within the feng shui framework and guidance.

Five Element Balance
It is a myth to that you need all five elements in every room. This is not how feng shui works. That being said, all the different elements interact with each other and if you also have too much metal, then you are strengthening the water influence as metal supports water.

Chinese Horoscope Water influence
There are special form horoscope charts, such as Northern Water chart or Follow Water chart, which have really strong water influence, meaning that you are a Water Day Master or Water Self Element born in a water month and a water year, for example, so you already have a lot of water energy in your blueprint. These types of charts can be a blessing or a bit of a disadvantage if you don't learn how to make the most of its unique power.

Are you getting a fuller picture of how intricate and multi-layered this whole wisdom system is? Hard to do self-help feng shui without getting confused, right?! ;)

Drinking Water quality
Of course, the water that you drink is of huge importance to your health, whether or not there is excess Water element in the feng shui or in your Chinese Horoscope, we all need good quality drinking water.

Counter-top Water Filter
If you can't opt for a good quality plumbed in system, then the counter-top Nikken Water Filter is ideal for use in the Kitchen or Home office to provide you with wonderfully cleansed and mineralised water. It conveniently converts ordinary tap water into beautiful PiMag water, so helps to reduce plastic waste from buying plastic bottles of mineral water. These are so much better than cheaper alternatives you can buy.

Water Treatment Solutions for Pipes
There are options to use directly on the water pipes coming into the home, so that the water you drink and bathe/shower in is cleansed nd energised.  Contact me  for further details.

Landscaping options for Water Features
We supply beautiful external water features that bring a beautiful feng shui water element to your garden or external space. Contact me for further details.

I hope you have found this informative. In my next blog, in a week or so,  I look at the Wood Element in Feng Shui and Chinese Medicine.

In the meantime, do not hesitate to reach out if you have a project to discuss.
